God the Son, God who became flesh, became the visible representation of the immortal, invisible, and the almighty God. Let’s start at verse 17 and I’ll simply show you why I call this the most God-centered, God-exalting, God-saturated sermon in the Bible. First of all, he is the beginning of the church. The conclusion is unmistakable: Jesus is God, and all things were created by him. In fact, if you push it all the way back, the supremacy of God is the theme of God. If God exists, the God of the Bible, then what’s wrong with our preaching? Do you want to know what God looks like? Not a God of spelling anarchy and you know if you’re sitting out there now and you don’t care about the supremacy of God in spelling, then you won’t get my plea tonight. Jesus affirmed this to Peter in the gospel of Matthew. The word ''Supremacy'' in the Oxford Dictionary is defined as ''The state or condition of being superior to all others in authority, power, or status.'' B. Jesus inherits all things (16b) This thing had been thought through centuries before God looked to see what he would do at the fullness of time and he has spoke it through promises and profits that he would do it this way. 16:17). This is the only place in the whole New Testament that we find this word “supreme.” It is a word that means “to be first” or “to hold first place.” I like the way the New American Standard Bible translates it: “so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” (Colossians 1:18, NASB). We read in John 1:18: “No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.” (John 1:18) What is John saying here? From verse 21, it was God who gave to Israel her first King, Saul. In John 8:58 Jesus told the Jews: “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58) This is a remarkable statement because that phrase “I am” was the divine name for God. The author is showing that Jesus Christ is God’s supreme and final revelation to us. I’ve had two kinds of sons. Colossians tells us that Jesus created all things in heaven and on earth. Back to Colossians 1:18: “He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” (Colossians 1:18) Now the first thing we should grasp from this verse is the still amazing fact after all these years that Jesus is alive. That’s why they have names. I got up in front of these 2,000 students and said the chief end of God is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. An awe and dread and fear of not knowing, loving, trusting or obeying such a God. Why do you make so much of the supremacy of God being the theme of preaching? They give a false understanding of who Jesus is. It’s all going to terminate on God the father, Jesus is God and he will reflect all glory to his Father. What is supreme to God ultimately is God. They don’t get to hear each other. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (John 14:8-9) Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Colossians 1:15-23 describe the person and work of Christ in the highest, most exalted terms imaginable. 3) Jesus existed before all things. If you watch enough TV you cannot help but forget God. Christ is supreme over all things, which is why Christ is central to all things, which is why we are called to live the Christ-centered life. In fact the firstborn was used as a title for the Messiah who would rule over and inherit God’s kingdom. Introduction. The second commandment forbids us from making any images of God. When we compare Scripture to Scripture it becomes clear that Jesus was not a created being.
